Proxim enables Stephouse Networks' expansion of WiFi and WiMAX wireless services

As Portland’s MetroFi Wi-Fi Network is Shut Down, Stephouse Deploys Proxim to Provide High-Speed Wireless Broadband Alternative for Businesses and Individuals

Proxim Wireless Corporation (NASDAQ: PRXM), a leading provider of end-to-end broadband wireless systems that deliver the quadruple play, today announced that Stephouse Networks, a Portland, OR based ISP, has deployed Proxim equipment to provide the city of Portland with high speed wireless broadband connectivity. Stephouse has deployed a combination of Proxim’s Tsunami™ MP.11 WiMAX and Proxim’s ORiNOCO® AP-4000LR Wi-Fi mesh technology to blanket seven square miles of Portland with wireless broadband coverage.

Currently, Stephouse has covered five square miles of Portland’s downtown area and two square miles of North Portland’s St. Johns area with both Wi-Fi and WiMAX service. Stephouse’s use of Proxim equipment allows the ISP to provide T1, T3 and fiber-grade wireless broadband services to businesses or individuals within the service area. Utilizing a combination of Proxim’s Tsunami MP.11 WiMAX products for backhaul and Proxim’s ORiNOCO AP-4000LR dual-radio Wi-Fi access points deployed in mesh mode for connectivity, Stephouse is able to provide high-performance broadband wireless as a fixed-line replacement for a fraction of the cost.

With the recent cancellation of MetroFi’s city-wide Wi-Fi network, Stephouse’s service offerings provide a higher-performance alternative for Portland residents looking to remain wirelessly connected. Stephouse utilizes Proxim to provide Portland enterprises with a wide range of broadband connection options (visit http://www.stephouse.net/ for more details), and it also provides individual users with unlimited Wi-Fi connectivity within the service areas for just $20 per month. For casual use, Stephouse also provides every user one free hour of connectivity per day, up to 10 hours per month.

“As we’ve seen, the free municipal Wi-Fi business model just doesn’t work. But as a local company, we love to give back to our community,” said Tyler Booth, President of Stephouse Networks. “Often times users just need to connect for a few minutes per day – to find a map on their iPhone, to locate a local business, read the news on their lunch break, etc. – so we give everyone one free hour per day, up to 10 hours per month, to do whatever they need to do. And for users who need more than that, we offer a very reasonable monthly rate.”

In addition to Stephouse’s coverage in downtown Portland, it has also deployed Proxim’s WiMAX and Wi-Fi mesh equipment to provide broadband wireless connectivity to the St. John’s area in North Portland. Until now, the cable company has been the only option for broadband service to the residents of St. John’s. With Proxim, Stephouse is able to provide a much needed, high-performance broadband wireless alternative for the area.

“Wireless connectivity is something that the people of Portland have come to expect, and we are glad that, through Stephouse Networks, we are able to play a part in providing broadband wireless services as an alternative to the now defunct citywide Wi-Fi network,” said Geoffrey Smith, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at Proxim Wireless.

For more information on Proxim Wireless’ broadband wireless solutions, please visit www.proxim.com.

We're Green!

Stephouse Networks has long been commited to minimizing our environmental impact in whatever way possible. With the help of Green Mountain Energy, we have recently offset our "Carbon Footprint" by 100% through the ongoing purchase of renewable energy credits.

We are currently in the process of trading out our gas guzzling service vehicles with E85 equiped service vans to minimize our local environmental impact created by driving.

Moreover we are commited to utilizing environmentally friendly practices in our office. All of our paper materials are printed on 100% post consumer recycled paper and soy based inks.

New website for City of Portland developed by Stephouse

The City of Portland recently selected Stephouse to create a new look for their website for the Childrens Investment Fund. We are pleased to say that the website is now live at www.childrensinvestmentfund.org.

Their website is unique in the fact that it not only needed to be an informational tool but it also needed to communicate the emotional side of their project using stories and photographs to show viewers the impact their initiative is making on the City of Portland.

Another challenge we faced in this project was that information for their website is constantly being updated and changed. We created a back end interface to the website so that city employees could easily update information, photos, calendar events, and more without contracting an outside web developer to do it. This feature has streamlined their update process and saved the city thousands of dollars in website maintenence costs.

New Billing Statement Procedures

We've gotten some feedback that sometimes our bills arrive too close to the due date, and so we're changing the way we do things.

Under our new procedure, bills due between the 1st and the 15th will be mailed on the 7th of the previous month and bills due between the 16th and the 31st will be mailed on the 21st of the previous month.

While we implement this, you may receive two bills close together. Your billing period will not change, but you will receive the bill sooner than you did in the past.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call us toll-free at 877-622-4678 or e-mail us at billing@stephouse.net.

Thank you.

Streaming media servers upgraded

We applied a few software updates to our streaming media servers today that should improve the performance of your audio and video streams. There was a memory leak in the last version that would cause the server's performance to slowly degrade over time until it was rebooted. This new update should solve that issue.
